15 Key Pieces for Fall, 20 Outfit Ideas

The weather on Monday and over the weekend felt so much like the beginning of fall, which is crazy because it is clearly still July (for a day)! All of my senses were so thrown off! As I chose to forego my usual iced skinny vanilla latte for a hot one yesterday morning, I could not help but wish just a little bit that it was a pumpkin spice latte and that I was wearing some of my new fall attire. I was even daydreaming about college football and tailgating on my drive into work. I could easily argue that fall is my favorite season. I love the weather, the colors, the food, the hot drinks, the cozy fashion, dressing in layers, college football game days, the list goes on... But as much as I love fall, I had to snap out of it! I am not ready yet! I need a few more weekends at the lake house before I start donning plaid popovers and riding boots! Even so, that doesn't mean that I can't get excited about starting to shop for fall, does it?! It's crazy how this world of shopping works. I started shopping for spring/summer in January, and now I am shopping for fall in July. My husband thinks it's crazy, and maybe it is, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. You better believe I was not going to miss out on an excursion vest from J.Crew Factory on sale!

As I am evaluating my closet and doing some shopping, I put together my 15 key pieces for a fabulous fall wardrobe. As I did this, I started realizing how many different outfit combinations I could make with just 15 pieces! I played around in Polyvore and ended up with a few different combinations to share with you today. Actually, 20 to be exact. 20!! I already owned many of the pieces, or a similar version of them, and recently picked up a few more during a recent J.Crew Factory sale. Next on my list? Finding those leopard pumps from Target!

Vest (on sale in stores) | Blazer | Chambray | Plaid | Sweater (on sale in stores)

I love how a few of the pieces easily carry over from season to season. Chambray, boyfriend jeans, nude flats, the gold clutch and the pencil skirt are easily wearable now and come fall. I bet you already have some of those items in your closet, too! Fall is all about the layers, and these pieces all layer together very nicely to create a variety of looks. And those leopard pumps? Major steal alert! If you can only get a few things now, you can't go wrong with a pair of riding boots, a plaid popover, a camel blazer and some multi-strand pearls to accessorize. If those items don't scream fall, then I don't know what does! The vest and the sweater did disappear on the J.Crew Factory website recently, but rest assured, they are both currently available in stores! I also know more shipments of the vest are coming to stores on Friday, and I have a suspicion that both items will end up back online soon. Meanwhile, check out some outfit ideas using the key pieces below!

There is just something extra special and nostalgic about shopping for fall. I may not be "going back to school", but I still get excited about shopping for new "school clothes." As I start to revamp my closet for fall, I can't help but remember going school shopping with my mom and picking out new outfits to start the year. My mom would take us to the "good mall" about 45 minutes away, and it always felt special. I could not wait to wear my new outfits to school, and I loved planning which outfit was going to be my "first day of school outfit." Not much has changed at age 30. I still love to plan which one of my new fall outfits I will wear on that first cool, fall day. The front runner? Definitely a plaid popover and the cream excursion vest with the mutil-strand pearls (totally inspired by my bestie blog bud, Renee of Style with a Story, who had me so envious of her excursion vests all winter long). However, if it happens to be a work day, then the pom-pom sweater will be the winner!

What do you think of the 15 key pieces? Do you have any of these in your closet already? What are some of your key pieces for a fabulous fall wardrobe? I'd love to hear!
