Corporate Style Diaries: The Search for the Perfect Black Pant

Okay, friends...It's time to have a serious discussion. I have been on the hunt for the perfect pair of black pants for what seems like years. I'm not kidding. I have gone through a ridiculous number of black pants throughout the years. I know what you're thinking, "it shouldn't be so difficult to find a good pair of black pants." I agree. You're probably right. I don't know what my problem is. I need help.

So, what's the deal? The main issue is that they fit perfectly in the store, but after wearing them for half a day, they stretch out and are practically falling off me. I cannot even tell you how many pairs I have purchased for this to happen. The secondary issue is the fabric attracting anything and everything and looking dirty before I even get to work. It's pretty frustrating considering I have spent a decent amount of money on these pants. I consider them a staple item since I work in a business casual setting, so spending the money on a good pair or two is worth it. But, it's only worth it, if you actually like the pants.

So, let's talk about a few of the pants I've tried. The most recent pair I purchased was from The Limited. They were having a "buy one, get one" pants, skirts and blazers event, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to go get some new pants. Sadly, these pants stretch like crazy! I also don't like how the majority of styles do not have belt loops. I just don't get that. I want the option to wear a belt, easily.  Verdict: Good deal gone bad here. The pants I've purchased from Ann Taylor also tend to stretch out quite a bit, and as mentioned above, the material attracts everything. They look dirty in an instant. I thought these pants were the "perfect fit for me" when I tried them on in the store, but sadly that was not the case. Verdict: Not worth the money. The Loft pair was okay. They didn't stretch out at all throughout the day, but I wasn't a big fan of the fabric or cut of the legs. Verdict: Just not good enough. Lastly, the Banana Republic Sloan ankle pants. I purchased a pair in navy last summer, and they are my favorite. They fit perfectly, and they don't stretch out at all throughout the day. It looks like I am going to have to break down and buy more colors, especially black. Verdict: In love. When you find a good pair of pants, you just can't look back. The only thing about the Banana Republic pants is that they are ankle pants, so they only work during so much of the year...

So, now that I've rambled on about my pant problems, I need your help. I want to know your favorite black pants. As you know, I am an accountant and work in a business casual setting. As much as I wear color and push the limits with my work wear, a good pair of black pants is key. It is a staple item that I am willing to splurge on for the quality. I am tired of wasting my money! Give me some recommendations, friends! Where can I get the perfect pair of black pants?

Here is my criteria:

1. Slim cut/skinny or straight leg.
2. Work appropriate, but transitions well from work to dinner.
3. Quality material that doesn't stretch or look dirty after an hour of wear.
4. Under $100, preferably.

So, tell me about your favorite black pants? What is your criteria when shopping for them?
